Dawn Rabey
My formal journey in Psychology began in Texas with a BSc in Psychology in 1996. I then lived in Thailand, West Africa, and Poland for 5 years, with the purpose to leave behind what I knew, and to discover my Self and Life afresh. In particular, I was fascinated with different World Religions and expressions of spirituality that I encountered, while I searched for my own. I had grown up in a strong Christian family and was eager to see what else was out there. In 2008 I had a Kundalini Awakening which turned my life on end. By this time I had had a solid yoga practice for 10 years, so this was the context in which I held this experience. Eventually I separated from a 12 year marriage, my 10-yr old daughter decided to stay with me full-time, and I went back to school for a PhD in Counseling Psychology, specializing in Transpersonal Psychology. This grounded my own experience of Spiritual Awakening, and propelled a shift away from specializing in Eating Disorders to specializing in Transpersonal Psychology and Spirituality. I taught courses at UVIC, supervised MA-level counsellors, and worked with EAPs, and treatment centers. Throughout I maintained my private practice, and now devote most of my (work) energy to this. The way I practice is most aligned with Transpersonal, Relational, and Jungian Psychology. I’m also well-trained in Narrative, CBT, Satir, Gestalt, Somatic, EFT, Adlerian, and Family Therapy. I love my work, the immense possibilities it opens up over and over again, and the potentials that are constantly realized. It is my deepest pleasure and passion to be part of your life-journey. The guiding principal of my practice is non-judgemental support, coupled with evidence-based interventions. Therefore, I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), and Gottman Method couples counselling, two of the most researched treatment models. I have chosen to become highly specialized in my practice, rather than to generalize.
EMDR is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma, addictions, eating disorders and other mental health issues. It is NOT traditional talk-therapy.
Gottman Method relationship counselling involves rigorous assessment and focused skills development. Its goals are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, respect, and affection, and create a heightened sense of empathy within the context of the relationship.
